NY Times Is Wrong About Maximizing College Aid Chances
Today's article on the New York Times website, "Expert Advice on the Best Ways to Secure Financial Aid," is a glaring example of more bad college advice. To say that parents should, "Embrace the fact that there is no 'secret,' no magic way to increase your aid chances," is misleading at best.

Raymond James CEO Reilly Justifies Billion-Dollar Deal (VIDEO)
A year ago, in a meeting at Raymond James Financial’s St. Petersburg, Fla. headquarters, Chief Executive Paul Reilly told me the firm was content to grow organically and make small acquisitions to fill out product lines or geographic gaps. In further conversations he used the term “bite-size” to describe the kinds of deals he would consider.

For Brazil Equities, Possibly A Case Of Too Hot, Too Fast
Brazilian equities are on a tear lately, slowly recovering from the doldrums of 2011. Anyone who bought in at the end of the year can tap themselves on the back for impeccable timing. For those who think it's time to jump in, a word of caution. "The kind of jump we've seen in Brazilian stocks raises concern," says Heiner Skaliks, portfolio manager at the Strategic Latin America Fund (SLATX). "The government is nervous and we've seen them come in and intervene in the market today for the first time since the summer. It makes me think that if the inflows push their currency too strong, they will reinstate the foreign transaction taxes that they removed last year," he says. Skaliks has "maybe 1%" of his fund in Brazilian equity. He prefers high yield dollar denominated Brazilian corporate debt. Brazil's Central Bank stepped in and swept up dollars out of the market on Friday after watching the real go from BRL1.77 to BRL1.72 in a matter of days. It was the first time the Central Bank intervened in five months. Inflow momentum is growing. In the year to date, the MSCI Emerging Markets index has risen more than 20% in dollar terms. Brazil's booked $1.2 billion in equity inflow from foreign investors since the start of the year, second only to China's equity inflow of $1.3 billion. Audrey Kaplan, a fund manager at Federated InterContinental (RIMAX) went from a zero percent weighting on Brazil to 6.3% as of Jan. 31. Her benchmark, meanwhile, has a Brazil weighting of just 3.7%. She's nearly doubling down. Brazil is back! "We're expecting average corporate earnings per share to be 20% over the next 12 months in Brazil compared to an emerging markets average of 15%," she says. "The Brazil story is very much in place following last year's beating it took in the stock market." What's the story? Domestic consumption driving the economy, that's what. Household consumption in Brazil is expected to be 3.8% in 2012, going to 4.9% in 2013, according to Kaplan. She's been buying Brazil slowly since the fourth quarter. Petrobras was one of her buys around November. It's up over 25% YTD. Skaliks' concerns are not far fetched. This is a very new regime running things at the Central Bank. They are more coordinated with the Finance Minister Guido Mantega. That was never the case with former Central Bank president Henrique Meirelles. Mantega gets nervous when the real strengthens below 1.70. Last year, investors were wondering what the magic number was for the real before Mantega slapped foreign investors with taxes in an effort to curb portfolio investments. Was it 1.60? Was it 1.65? This year, it might be 1.70. Nobody knows. But any tax would likely put a pin hole in this balloon, if one can call it that. But if emerging markets manage to decouple from Europe, and if the U.S. economy keeps reporting decent data as it did on Friday with its jobs numbers, then Brazil should do well. The Central Bank also signaled that it intends to lower interest rates, currently at 10.5%. Market estimates have the rates going below 10%. Nomura Securities in New York is looking for a 9.5% base rate in Brazil this year, it's lowest since the Lehman Brothers crisis took rates down to 8.75% in early 2009. Of course, all this bodes well for equities.

S&P/LSTA Index Loan Index Hits All-Time High With A 2.18% Gain In Jan.
Buoyed by robust technical conditions and improving investor sentiment across the capital markets, the S&P/LSTA Leveraged Loan Index returned 2.18% in January. That’s the best monthly performance since October, and, before that, March 2010. The larger names that comprise the S&P/LSTA 100 Index fared even better in January, posting a 2.88% return. And with the bulls running, the search for yield intensified, sending lower-priced, lower-rated loans higher. Defaulted loans in particular ripped the cover off the ball, with an 8.42% gain.
